Problem: Defrost system failure – excessive frost buildup detected or defrost cycle timeout
How to Fix Refrigerator Error
- Unplug refrigerator and manually defrost evaporator coils using hair dryer (never sharp objects).
- Remove rear wall panel in freezer to inspect evaporator for ice buildup.
- Test defrost thermostat continuity when cold (<15°F) - should read 0 ohms. Warm to room temperature - should read infinite resistance.
- Test defrost heater resistance (20-40 ohms) as described in Er dH procedure.
- Inspect defrost drain tube for clogs causing water backup onto evaporator (clear with warm water and pipe cleaner).
- Check evaporator fan operation – stalled fan causes poor airflow and excessive frosting.
- If heater and thermostat test good but error persists, suspect failed defrost timer circuit on main control board.
- Replace main control board W11035831 if all components test good.
- After repair, monitor defrost cycle operation – should activate every 8-12 hours for 20-30 minutes.
- Verify evaporator coils frost evenly during cooling cycle and completely defrost during defrost cycle.
Still Not Working?
If the replacement part didn’t fix the issue, you may have a wiring problem or main board failure.
