How to Fix E61 Error

  1. UNPLUG THE DRYER. This code points to a failure in the heating circuit.
  2. Remove the rear panel to access the cylindrical heater assembly.
  3. Visually inspect the heating element coil for any visible breaks. Use a multimeter to test the element for continuity. A good element will have resistance; a bad one will be open (infinite resistance).
  4. Locate the two thermostats on the heater assembly: the high-limit thermostat and the thermal cut-off. Test both for continuity. They should both show a closed circuit (near zero ohms). If either is open, it must be replaced.
  5. Replace the failed component(s). It is best practice to replace both thermostats if one has failed. Always investigate and clean the vent, as a clog is the number one cause of a blown thermostat.
