How to Fix E4 Error (Step-by-Step)

  1. Unplug the refrigerator from its power source to ensure safety.
  2. Pull the unit away from the wall and remove the lower rear access panel.
  3. Locate the compressor, which is the large, black, dome-shaped component.
  4. On the side of the compressor, find the start relay and overload protector, which are housed in a plastic cover. Remove the cover.
  5. Carefully pull the start relay straight off the terminals on the compressor.
  6. Plug the new start relay firmly onto the compressor terminals.
  7. Replace the plastic cover, screw the rear access panel back on, and plug the refrigerator in to see if the compressor starts.
  8. Turn the appliance off, wait about 2 minutes, then turn it back on.
