How to Fix Refrigerator Error

  1. Unplug refrigerator and remove rear wall panel in freezer compartment.
  2. Locate defrost heater assembly beneath evaporator coils.
  3. Some models have integrated temperature sensor in heater circuit – test heater resistance (20-40 ohms).
  4. If heater tests open circuit, replace entire defrost heater assembly WPW
  5. On models with separate heater limit thermostat, test thermostat continuity when cold (<50°F) - should read 0 ohms.
  6. Warm thermostat to 140°F using heat gun – should open circuit (infinite resistance).
  7. If thermostat doesn’t open at correct temperature, replace defrost thermostat WPW
  8. Inspect wiring harness between heater circuit and control board for damage near heat source.
  9. Verify proper mounting of thermostat on evaporator tubing (must make solid thermal contact).
  10. After repair, initiate manual defrost cycle and verify heater deactivates when evaporator reaches 50°F.
